How Can I Maximize Storage Space in a Small Closet?

I have designed thousands of custom closets and built-ins in the Tampa Bay community since 2013. Limited space is one of the biggest challenges I encounter. I specialize in assisting clients maximize their available space. I believe a well planned closet must be practical, functional and impressive.

Here are some tips on how to maximize your storage space in a small closet:

Declutter

The first step to maximizing your storage space is to declutter your closet. Get rid of anything you don't wear at least once a year, use, or love. This will free up space for the things you actually need. If you struggle getting rid of things, we partner with several professional organizers in the area like Neat Method. If you decide to install a new closet system, we may be able to offer up to four hours of complimentary professional organizing to help you gain control of your space!

Use Vertical Space

Hang your clothes on a hanging rod instead of folding them in drawers. This will free up space on the shelves and make it easier to see what you have. We utilized wardrobe lifts above the long dress hanging in the photo below to maximize the available vertical space.

Use Shelves & Bins

Shelves and bins are a great way to organize your closet and keep things tidy. Use shelves for storing folded clothes, shoes, and accessories. Use bins for storing seasonal items, out-of-season clothes, and other miscellaneous items. Bins do not have to be expensive, but they should fit the space. For example, these bins are currently $6.98 at Walmart and are available in several prints and colors. These, paired with the moveable acrylic dividers on top (available on Amazon) and the clutch acrylic dividers (also available on Amazon), perfectly organize the shelves above dress hanging.

Get Creative with Storage

There are all sorts of creative ways to store things in a small closet. For example, you can use a shoe rack to store scarves, a hanging shoe organizer to store jewelry, or a hanging organizer to store belts. This slide out valet rod is a must have for any closet! This can be used for hanging dry cleaning, laundered clothing, a special event outfit, or for setting aside outfits to pack for a trip. The best part of this is that the valet rod can be set back when not in use (see 2nd photo).

Keep It Tidy

Make it a habit to put things away after you use them. This will help keep your closet organized and tidy. When everything has a place, this will help you put the items back in their place. Also, resist the urge to place more items on the shelf than what the space was intended to hold.

By following these tips, you can maximize your storage space in a small closet and make it easier to get dressed in the morning.

Here are some additional tips:

  • Use clear containers for when you want to see what's inside, and solid bins for when you want to conceal the items.
  • Invest in a good custom closet system! Contact me to see how I can help you accomplish this. If you are local to the Tampa Bay/Sarasota area I can assist locally, or I can provide designs, for an hourly fee, for use at a local closet company of your choice.
  • Label everything. This will help you find what you’re looking for quickly and easily.
  • Don't be afraid to declutter on a regular basis. This is recommended each year and will help you feel lighter and accomplished.

With a little effort, you can turn even the smallest closet into a functional and stylish space.
